Wolfinger Cemetery

Established in 1835, Wolfinger Cemetery is one of the oldest pioneer burial grounds in Lucas County, Ohio. Located along Wolfinger Road within Secor Metropark in Richfield Township, near Berkey, Ohio, the cemetery holds a unique place in local history. It is notably the only active cemetery located within the Metroparks Toledo system. 

Pioneer Roots

Early Settlement
The history of Wolfinger Cemetery is closely connected to Jacob Wolfinger, one of the area’s early pioneer farmers. The Wolfinger family, of German heritage, settled in the area during the mid-1830s. Jacob Wolfinger is credited with constructing one of the first log cabins in what is now the Secor Metropark area. 

Origins as a Family Burial Ground
The cemetery began as a private burial area on the Wolfinger family farm. Township historical records indicate that two Wolfinger children were among the earliest children of pioneer settlers to be born and later die in Richfield Township. Their burials helped establish the site as a family cemetery, which eventually developed into a community burial ground. 

Connection to Richfield Township
Jacob Wolfinger also played an important role in the early government of Richfield Township. When the township was formally organized in 1840, he served as one of its first trustees. Nearly two centuries later, Wolfinger Cemetery remains an important link to Richfield Township’s pioneer heritage and continues to be maintained by Richfield Township. 

Today, Wolfinger Cemetery serves not only as an active cemetery but also as a lasting historical landmark, preserving the names, stories, and legacy of some of the families who helped establish Richfield Township.
